Dry Cooler Selection Notes

A dry cooler removes heat by passing ambient air across finned coils, allowing the process fluid to stay inside a closed loop without direct water evaporation. This makes dry coolers attractive for sites that need water saving, simple winter operation or reduced plume visibility. They are commonly considered for data centers, power systems, hydraulic equipment, compressors, industrial chillers and process cooling circuits.

The main selection factors are heat load, fluid type and concentration, inlet and outlet fluid temperatures, local dry-bulb temperature, allowable pressure drop, noise limits and installation space. Fan arrangement, fin material and coil material should also match the site environment. HACST can review these conditions and recommend a dry cooler configuration that balances cooling performance, energy use and maintenance access for the project.

Dry cooler projects may also require attention to seasonal operation. In cold climates, the fluid mixture and control strategy should protect the coil, while in hot climates the design should be checked carefully against peak ambient conditions.
